I don't think he changed his mind on a whim. It's more likely that Newby had an established relationship with Cal's running backs coach Ron Gould and when he left for the HC job at Davis I think Newby's interest in Cal took a hit.
Although UCLA and Nebraska seem to be his top two, I think there's still enough time before LOI day for the new Cal staff to build a relationship and get back in it with Newby.
