CBS Sports story on Ben Howland

  • Link is below. Worth a look.

UCLA's Ben Howland on his past, his future and, yes, Bill Walton, too - CBSSports.com

UCLA enters Wednesday's game at Washington State ranked 23rd with a 12-4 record in the Pac-12 that has the Bruins tied atop the league standings. So things are going well for this team that starts three freshmen. But there's still a vibe of uncertainty surrounding the program because nobody has said for sure, because nobody can say for sure that Ben Howland will return for his 11th season.

  • Great article. I enjoyed reading it. Thanks for the link!

I agree that Ben has "evolved". He had to. I also agree that once you are on the "hot seat" it's like being an alcoholic. Once an alcoholic you are always an alcoholic but not an issue until you take a drink.

Once on the "hot seat" you never really get off of it. It's just not an issue until your next embarrassing loss. If he slides backwards with yet another embarrassing loss. An early exit from the Pac 12 tourney, or a first or second round upset means all the talk of his being on the "hot seat" will start again.

There were many Bruin faithful like Bill Walton (and I agreed) that he was doing a poor job of coaching even when he was winning. I was his harshest critic.

However, when I tune into watch the Bruins lately I like what I see. It is a reflection of the journey Howland made as a coach. As suggested in the article his stubbornness slowed his change. I think he deserves to stay but his past stubbornness may lead to his undoing (not to mention the scathing S.I. article)

If this season (at least what the team looks like now , they were awful in the beginning) is a promise for the future. I think Uncle Ben should stay on as coach. If he shows signs of going back to the ego-maniacal, conservative, controlling Ben then he should dust off his resume.

He needs to work some magic after loss last night.

  • Agreed. I think everyone should read this article as it applies to things outside of BBAL.
