I come with empathy for 1) what a crappy conference schedule you were dealt this coming year (@ Stanford & Oregon on consecutive weekends?!?!) and 2) what a BS system we have for determining division champions.
You and ASU seem to be the consensus favorites (with us getting a little "maybe, if they can get get their act together" consideration), but the schedules that will determine the division champ aren't close to equal.
It's a flawed format, and you guys drew the short straw this year. I really hope it doesn't play a factor this fall.
It does seem to be unfair... But we didn't have to play Oregon and Washington last year and we played Stanford at home.... Playing Stanford away and then Oregon seems reasonable... but on consecutive weekends???? Away????
I honestly believe that we will beat Stanford. We match up well with them. We should have beat them last year in the Pac 12 championship game... But for a couple of gigantic breakdowns we win. We are improved this year and Stanford won't be as good. I think we are okay.
Oregon provides a matchup problem... They will always create a matchup problem. However, at least we play both teams in the middle of the schedule. It will give us some time to get our young players a chance to acclimate to our defense. We will rely on a couple of defense. One for sure. Hopefully our young guys will have "game experience", our wounded will be healed and the five fingers of our offensive line gel into a "heavy-hitting fist".
However, I think we just play the hand we were dealt and not complain about it. It stinks but complaining won't change the schedule.
i think of it this way... If we beat those two formidable opponents, on the road, in back to back games.... We'll be competing for a national championship. Our schedule softens up after that...
Not sure who makes up the schedule, but I imagine there will always be short straws drawn because the conference is too damned big.
Good points. Should be interesting.
